1930 – Building the Boulder Dam- renamed the Hoover Dam
1931- Increased population due to increase in labor to build the Hoover Dam-drew business people, Mormon bankers, and organized crime to make money off the influx of new people.
1931- Legalized gambling-On local -level- First license- Northern Club - Map for the first gaming licenses in Las Vegas - Fremont Street Experience
1931- Hoover Dam finished-Lake Mead was Las Vegas reservoir-became tourist attraction.
1942- Hotel El Rancho Vegas -First resort on the Vegas Strip
1946- -Bugsy Siegel - open the Famingo with the help from mob boss Meyer Lansky
1952-1957-Teamsters and Mormon bankers provided the money to open the Sahara, Sands, Rivera, Binion Horseshoe,and the Tropicana- Gambling was not the only draw in Vegas- with new hotels came big time entertainment.
1966-Howard Hughes
Moved to Las Vegas-stayed at the Desert Inn- Later bought the Desert Inn and other hotels in
Las Vegas, including hotels owed by organized crime families. Howard Hughes helped changed
the image of Vegas from seedy underworld to a more respectable image.
NOTE OF INTEREST: The Last Vegas strip does not resided in the Las Vegas proper- The Las Vegas Strip properties is an unincorporated township called Paradise- Nevada law- cannot annex a unincorporated township- Today- the Las Vegas Strip is not part of Las Vegas.
1970- Population Growth- Double growth in every decade -Rapid growth produced increase in commercial and residential areas
1980- Larger and bigger Hotels-- Steve Wynn Mirage- Start of super hotels
2001- Financial Crisis-Due to rapid growth and expansion, Las Vegas was one of the hardest hit by the mortgage crises, over valued property- people were over extended- Residential and commercial property was over valued and foreclosures took a big hit in Las Vegas-According to some financial reports- Las Vegas was one of the worst places to get a job.
In summary: Las Vegas - will overcome the financial crisis- it may take time - it's Vegas- the entertainment capitol of the world
